Abstract

Anogeissus latifolia and Terminalia tomentosa are commonly lopped for leaf fodder in Shiwalik hill region of Haryana. During present study the leaf fodder and fuelwood yields of these two tree species were measured and yield tables were prepared on using suitable regression equations. Leaf fodder yield was more in T. tomentosa while fuel wood yield was more in A. latifolia.

Abstract

20 clones in line plantation and 10 clones in compact block plantation trials have been laid out in the farmers agricultural fields at Yamunanagar (Haryana) by planting the ETPs of poplar clones under the agroforestry extension programme of UNDP project. Early findings indicate that the clones S7C15, St-67, G-3. and G-48 are good for line plantation as well as compact block plantings where as row planting the clone S7C8 also has shown good results. Clones L-88 and L-89 also appear to h ave good potential for growth in row planting but need more care and maintenance as compared to other clones. The results also prove that timely planting and proper care of the plantation are sine qua non for successful agroforestry plantations based on poplars.

Abstract

Tripura is a small hill State in the North-Eastern part of India. About 60 per cent of geographical area is forest land. The recorded forest area and actual forest cover have declined substantially over the years due to high rate of population growth. The per capita forest area has come down to 0.23 ha in 1991 from 1.38 ha in 1951. The State Government has taken up large scale plantations of forestry tree species and rubber. The Forest Department is under severe pressure to supply forest products and to protect the forests from illicit clearing and diversion of forest land for settlement and other developmental activities. The rate of deforestation is higher than the rate of afforestation. There is urgent need to check the population growth and to increase the plantation target per year with the people's cooperation and to develop alternative means for firewood and timber.

Abstract

Objectives: To assess the diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of colposcopy in patients with abnormal cervical cytology and/or unhealthy cervix.

Methods: Pap smear screening was done in 500 sexually active women attending the Gynaecological OPD at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana. 252 women with abnormal cervical cytology or unhealthy cervix or both underwent Colposcopy. Cervical biopsy was taken in 87 cases and the results were compared and statistically analysed.

Results: A statistically significant relation was found between abnormal cytology and Grade III colposcopy. Diagnostic accuracy of colposcopy for LSIL and HSIL was 74.07 % and for squamous cell carcinoma it was 83.33%.

Conclusion: Colposcopy should be done routinely in women with abnormal cervical cytology and unhealthy cervix for timely detection of cervical pre neoplastic and neoplastic lesions.

The paper presents a resume of earlier work done on algal flora of Kumaon hills. (U.P.) region of the Himalayas and describes twenty-five taxa of desmids (Chlprophyceae) belonging to the genus Cosmarium Corda collected from different crop-fields situated in Pithoragarh district Uttar Pradesh. All these taxa are being recorded for the first time from this Himalayan region.

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the cardioprotective effect of methanolic extract of Aegle marmoles leaves (AMLE) against isoproterenol (ISO) induced myocardial damage in rats. Rats of either sex were administered AMLE (100 and 500 mg/kg) for three weeks and propranolol (PRO, 10 mg/kg) for one week in their respective groups orally. Subsequently myocardium injury was induced by subcutaneous administration of isoproterenol (150 mg/kg) for two consecutive days. The influence of prophylactic treatment was analysed by quantification of biomarkers and antioxidants. The CK-MB activities were fallen in serum and raised in heart tissue of animals treated with low and high doses of AMLE as well as PRO compared to ISO control. However, low dose of AMLE did not demonstrate any significant change in serum and tissue LDH activity when compared to ISO control. Further, high and low doses of AMLE caused significant elevation in SOD and CAT activities compared to ISO control. Furthermore, TBARS level declined in heart tissues of animals treated with PRO and high doses of AMLE, whereas, low dose of AMLE was not equally potent. Hence it is concluded that the low dose of AMLE was less effective than the high dose of AMLE and PRO.

Abstract

A cataract is any opacity of the lens, whether it is a small local opacity or a complete loss of transparency. The etiologic factor may be trauma, inflammation, metabolic or nutritional defects, radiation damage or simply an advanced senile change. Cataract is the single largest cause of blindness in the world. It blinds an estimated 17 million people. Cataract surgery, however is probably the single most effective operation performed in the whole of medicine and certainly one of the most common. When we consider cataract as a "global" problem, we are referring to "senile" cataract, a type assumed to be age-related.

Abstract

Vegetarians live longer and Healthier life. This idea is supported by the Berlin vegetarian study, which was begun in 1985 at the Institute for Social Medicine and Epidemiology of the German Health Office in Berlin. Furthermore, the endurance of a vegetarian is three times that of a non-vegetarian. The vegetarians had lower values of uric acid in their blood and are less in danger of suffering from gout. Their kidneys also function better for the same reason. The risk factors associated with the cardio-vascular disorders and cancer occurs less often. Some doctors have pointed out that strict vegetarian diet may result in lack of vitamin B₁₂, some other proteins and nutrients, but their cholesterol level is very low. The cholesterol level also depends upon the physical activity. If the non-vegetarians, do exercise daily, the chances of increased cholesterol and that of diseases associated with it will be lesser.
